RSN Power Rankings (Jan. 23)

Week 8

  1.  Villanova (19-1)           villanova_wildcats_logo

Last week’s ranking:  1  (-)

Villanova has bounced back from their loss at Butler with 5 straight Big East wins. Two easy home victories over Seton Hall and Providence rounded out the last week for the Wildcats. Up next is a potential trap game with a trip to Marquette, leading up to their massive non-conference matchup with Virginia on Sunday.

2.  Gonzaga (19-0)             gonzaga-logo

Last week’s ranking: 2 (-)

The Bulldogs are the lone unbeaten left in College Basketball and their performances show why. A drubbing of Saint Mary’s, their only competition in the WCC, proved that Gonzaga was here to stay. The Dogs have a string of 6 games they will be expected to win before traveling to Saint Mary’s College for their awaited rematch with the Gaels.

3.  Kansas (18-1)                 university_of_kansas_jayhawk_logo

Last week’s ranking: 4 (UP 1)

The next 3 games will prove what the Jayhawks are truly made of. We have been criticising Kansas’ lack of non conference difficulty and their close calls thus far in Big 12 play for weeks now. It won’t get any tougher than two road games in a row at West Virginia and at Kentucky, followed by Baylor at Allen FIeldhouse for Kansas. This is there chance to prove themselves as the #1 team in the country.

4.  Baylor (18-1)                  baylor_university_athletics_logo-svg

Last week’s ranking: 3 (DOWN 1)

Many dismissed Baylor after a tough game in Morgantown, despite their first #1 ranking in their history. Baylor is for real. With wins over Louisville, Oregon, and Xavier, amongst others, the Bears have proven that they can take down top tier teams. Johnathan Motley and Co. host Texas Tech before traveling to Mississippi as part of the Big 12-SEC Challenge.

5.  Kentucky (17-2)           kentucky_wildcats_logo-svg

Last week’s ranking: 6 (UP 1)

A hot and talented South Carolina team rolled into Rupp Arena to attempt to unseat Kentucky at the top of the SEC on Saturday… only to fall down 28-12 in the first 12 minutes. The Gamecocks looked totally discombobulated on offense to start, and while clawing back into it to make it a game, Kentucky held them off to cruise to their league leading 7th SEC win. While UK’s next fixture is a trip to Knoxville to take on the Volunteers, all eyes will be on the Wildcats on Saturday when they face Kansas in a top 5 matchup.

6.  Florida State (18-2)      florida_state_seminoles_alternate_logo

Last week’s ranking: 8 (UP 2)

A few weeks ago, Florida State sunk their teeth into a 6 game stretch in which they’d face 6 ranked teams. At the conclusion, the Seminoles took 5 out of 6, with the lone loss being at Chapel Hill. The run included wins over Duke, Notre Dame, Louisville, and a road win at Virginia. The Seminoles are on the brink of the 1 line in our bracketology and are arguably the best team in a stacked ACC.

7. Arizona (18-2)                university_of_arizona_block_a-svg

Last week’s ranking: 14 (UP 7)

Arizona is on a surge in which they’ve jumped to the top of the Pac 12 standings and are winners of 12 straight. A fantastic win at UCLA led by freshman standout Lauri Markkanen came just days after a solid road effort at USC. The WIldcats are as hot as any team in the nation and are looking like serious contenders come March under Sean Miller.

8. North Carolina (18-3)   university_of_north_carolina_tarheels_interlocking_nc_logo-svg

Last week’s ranking:  11 (UP 3)

North Carolina jumps back into the top 10 after 6 straight ACC wins including taking down powerhouse Florida State. A close call in Chestnut Hill, squeaking out a victory over Boston College, closed out another successful week. On Thursday the Tar Heels welcome Virginia Tech into Chapel Hill before traveling to Miami for a date with the Hurricanes.

9. Oregon (18-2)                  oregonducks-svg

Last week’s ranking:  10 (UP 1)

Dillon Brooks and the Ducks are red hot headed into Utah on Thursday night. While Utah remains bubbly, they are a sleeper in the Pac 12. Oregon will need to continue their good form to walk out with a W. The Ducks took down California and Stanford at home in their previous two games, both by comfortable margins, and sit with Arizona atop the Pac 12 standings.

10. UCLA (19-2)                   ucla_bruins_logo

Last week’s ranking:  5 (DOWN 5)

UCLA rounds out the top 10 as the 3rd Pac 12 team included. The Bruins fall but remain in the top 10 after their home loss to Arizona. Despite falling to the Wildcats, UCLA is still a top tier team and have one of the most talented cores in basketball. A trip to USC, losers of 3 of their last 5, provides a good chance to bounce back with a solid victory.

11. Notre Dame  (UP 1)

12. Wisconsin  (UP 7)

14. Butler (UP 2)

15. Cincinnati  (UP 2)
