Week 6

  1.  Villanova (15-1)

Last week’s ranking:  1  (-)

Despite the upset at Hinkle Fieldhouse, Villanova remains at #1 in our power rankings. It was bound to happen in such a tough Big East. Butler knocked off the undefeated Wildcats thanks to a balanced and enthusiastic effort on their home floor. Nova bounced back with a win over Marquette and host Xavier on Tuesday.

2.  Baylor (15-0)

Last week’s ranking: 2 (-)

Baylor has possibly the most impressive resume in basketball thus far with 5 top-50 wins. Tuesday’s trip to West Virginia will prove how good the Bears really are. A win for Johnathan Motley and Co. in Morgantown likely propels Baylor past Villanova and into the driver seat of our rankings.

3.  Gonzaga (15-0)

Last week’s ranking: 3 (-)

It was a quiet week for the Bulldogs as it was a single game slate. Gonzaga handled a pesky San Francisco squad on the road in a 15 point win. Later this week comes the game of the season in the West Coast Conference as Saint Mary’s travels to the Kennel. Two days before the big matchup, the Zags have a home matchup against Loyola Marymount.

4.  Kansas (14-1)

Last week’s ranking: 4 (-)

After Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk virtually cheated Kansas State out of overtime, the Jayhawks continued their unbeaten run with a solid win over Texas Tech. Kansas travels to Oklahoma who has spiraled over late in their next Big 12 matchup and look to continue their run of Big 12 regular season championships.

5.  UCLA (16-1)

Last week’s ranking: 5 (-)

UCLA continued their bounce back from the Oregon loss with two more wins. Wins over California and Stanford lead UCLA into a two-game stretch with tough away games against bubblers Colorado and Utah. Ball, Leaf, and Hamilton continue to dominate as one of the most talented cores in the country.

6.  Florida State (15-1)

Last week’s ranking: 10 (UP 4)

After knocking off Virginia in their toughest road test they had faced, the Seminoles showed no signs of a let down with a big home win over Virginia Tech. This was just the beginning for Florida State as they still have 4 ranked opponents in a row upcoming, but have started the 6 game stretch 2-0. Next up, Duke travels to Tallahassee for a huge one between ACC foes on Tuesday night.

7. Duke (14-2)

Last week’s ranking: 6 (DOWN 1)

Duke has responded well since the return of Grayson Allen and the unfortunate departure of Coach Mike Krzyzewski. Wins over Georgia Tech and Boston College take the Blue Devils to 14-2 and 2-1 in ACC play. The next two games should prove to be crucial for Duke as they travel to both Florida State and Louisville.

8. Kentucky (13-2)

Last week’s ranking:  11 (UP 3)

Two blowouts at Rupp Arena have Kentucky rolling into the heart of SEC play. A 26 point drubbing of an underrated Arkansas team highlighted a week in which they also sent Texas A&M back to College Station with a 42 point loss. A trip to Vanderbilt and a home tie with Auburn are on this week’s slate for the Wildcats.

9. Oregon (15-2)

Last week’s ranking:  13 (UP 4)

After a slow 2-2 start, the Ducks are on a 13 game hot streak. After taking down two straight undefeated Pac 12 squads, Oregon has shown why it was a number 1 seed last season. With Chris Boucher dominating in the post and Dillon Brooks knocking down shots, the Ducks took down Washington and Washington State on road turf this week. Next up is an in-state matchup with Oregon State.

10. Creighton (15-1)

Last week’s ranking:  12 (UP 2)

After competing with Villanova for almost the entire game yet falling short last week, the Bluejays rebounded with two road wins at the expense of Providence and St. John’s. Maurice Watson lit up the assist column in Providence with 14 and leads the nation in assists per game with a stunning 9.1 per game. Up next for Greg McDermott and Creighton is a home  test against Butler, who recently took down #1 Villanova.
